dc.description.abstract“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a platoon leader on Guam, Marianas Islands on 25 July, 1944. During the night of 25-26, July, 1944, First Lieutenant Eddy’s company sector was subjected to seven separate and determined enemy counterattacks. As the only officer platoon leader remaining in the company at the time, Lieutenant Eddy with complete disregard of his own safety, continually moved along the lines of his own platoon and of adjacent platoons of the company repeatedly exposing himself to enemy mortar, rifle, and machine gun fire in order to direct and encourage his men in the defense of the position. His example of courage and determination served as a constant source of inspiration to his men and greatly contributed to the successful defense of Fonte Hill. At about 0630, 26 July, 1944, after the last enemy counterattack had been repelled, Lieutenant Eddy, under the direct command of his company commander, organized and led a patrol of sixteen men to retake a strategic hill needed to strengthen the company lines. The hill was retaken by himself, his company commander and three men, the remainder of the patrol having become casualties in the attack. Lieutenant Eddy’s outstanding courage and aggressive leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.” -citation for the Silver Star earned during action on Guam.en_US
